Launch a Spatial App in the right industry

How to choose the right spatial app industry and the best application idea to maximize adoption and success (Vision Pro & Quest Apps).

Whatโ€™s up ๐Ÿ‘‹
Itโ€™s Jack

Welcome to this first newsletterโ€™s edition:
Here we discuss the latest news & opportunities in spatial computing.

This week's topics:

  • ๐Ÿ“ก News in figures (adoption & market)

  • ๐Ÿ“ Spatial projects (tools & resources)

  • ๐Ÿ“š Launch a spatial app in the right industry

I'm glad to have you here :)
To begin this edition, I wanted to get back to the basics of spatial computing:

What is exactly Spatial Computing?

Spatial computing concerns a new way of exploring data & browsing the web in your spatial environment - using headsets or other devices that adapt to your environment.

This is the future of human/machine interaction, the logical evolution that will follow that of the stationary computer to the laptop, the tablet, the phone...

The best resource I've found recently to clearly illustrate the societal change that's coming with spatial computing is the interview of David Chu - VP of Spatial Computing & XR at NVIDIA. Recommended!

๐Ÿ“ก News in figures

250,000

That's the estimated number of Apple Vision pro units sold in the first quarter of 2024. Pretty interesting, given that Apple's target for this year is 350,000.
But what interests us more is the number of return rates:

1%

This is the number of Apple Vision Pro that would have been returned within 14 days. I found an article that mentions the same return rate as the Iphone 15.
Let's focus on spatial apps, more specifically on Apple Vision Pro apps:

1,200

This is the approximate number of Apple Vision Pro apps in-store (according to Appfigures - updated on 17/03). I found it okay, but not very impressive. For comparison, there are 1,642 million apps available on the Appstore.

๐Ÿ“ Spatial projects

This week, I wanted to focus on a resource I've shared with some of you:
A directory of selected, tested and rated spatial applications.

I've been looking for the best spatial applications for a long time now, and I have to say that I haven't found much in the few directories of spatial/vision pro applications. So I got motivated and tested over 150 applications (free and paid), then noted and listed the ones I liked best.

Here is the link to access the directory of apps: Spatial Applist.
This list is updated every week, and you can now vote & suggest new app!

If you want to download the list in CSV, here is the link (not updated):

The 3 apps I'm most impressed by this week:

  • Television: An app that lets you watch video content on a vintage & retro TV of your choice with your buddies (we dive into the 90s)

  • Great White Board: A simple whiteboard to brainstorm, work, draw. Really useful and fun to use.

  • Desktop Aquariums: This app lets you add a dynamic aquarium to your home. WTF yes - but the rendering is really cool!

๐Ÿ“š Launch a spatial app in the right industry

Over the past three weeks, I've spoken to over 50 developers who have launched spatial apps (mainly on Apple Vision Pro), either on their own or for external clients.

Many of them are freelancers (available in Spatial Freelance directory).
I talked to them about performance, metrics and so on.

I tried to draw some conclusion on which industries work best for creating spatial applications (notably on the Apple Vision Pro) for now.

Here are the industries that seem most promising:

๐Ÿ‘”B2B use cases:

Develop B2B spatial apps for professional use.
Example: JigSpace

Related ideas:
- Facilitate remote work
- Increase productivity

๐Ÿ“š Education use cases

Develop educational spatial apps.
Example: Wisda

Related ideas:
- Facilitate team onboarding
- Facilitate language learning

๐Ÿ“ˆ Viral apps

Develop spatial app that can go viral.
Example: Coachy

Related ideas:
- Enable atypical discussion with AI avatars
- Offer immersive erotic content
